Professor Rex Sprouse is fond of saying that “Indiana University is like a candy store for anyone who is interested in languages.”
In our program, you will meet students and faculty members who are fascinated by languages, by multilingualism in the mind and in societies, and by how new languages are most effectively taught and learned. You will meet linguists who are interested in language teaching and language teachers who are interested in the structure of languages.
You will have at your disposal internationally recognized scholars of Second Language Studies, one of the world’s great Departments of Linguistics (with whom we collaborate closely), leading authorities on specific languages in a range of departments, and course offerings in over 70 languages in the regular curriculum of Indiana University, plus additional intensive language courses offered by Indiana University’s summer Language Workshop.
Perhaps most importantly, however, you will be surrounded on a daily basis by fellow graduate students who will share your passion for teaching and learning new languages and for understanding the processes by which second language acquisition is possible.
