The Department of Second Language Studies works with the College of Arts and Sciences to allow students to complete a request to substitute English for a research language.

To submit a request, please complete the fillable PDF. Please complete each section including all signatures from the applicant's department and provide the official SIS student records for their TOEFL score*. Please email all materials to dsls@indiana.edu.

Requests are generally processed within one week. However, response times may vary depending on the timing of the request. 

*The Department of Second Language Studies establishes 25 TOEFL iBT as the minimum reading sub-score for certification. TOEFL scores should not be more than 2 years old to be considered valid. Students who need to obtain a TOEFL score can email the Intensive English Program of the Department of Second Language Studies at iep@iu.edu to schedule an exam. The IEP offers TOEFL exams twice in the fall, spring, and summer for a small fee.
