Topic: L2 pragmatics
L2 pragmatics investigates the acquisition of pragmatics as part of second language acquisition. Research in L2 pragmatics is developmental. It focuses on acquisition rather than use or comparison. In this class we will ask how acquisitional principles drive the acquisition of L2 pragmatics, and how the acquisition of L2 pragmatics illustrates principles of acquisition. We will discuss how the acquisition of pragmatics can be investigated, research design for L2 pragmatics research, and how acquisition can be facilitated by instruction. Students may also suggest topics for reading and discussion.
