This chart is designed to help you calculate the cost of participating in the Intensive English Program (IEP).

¹After a student registers for the session, tuition fees are non-refundable.

²All students are required to have medical (health) insurance. The $298 amount listed above is only an average. With holidays and vacation breaks, coverage dates vary for each session and costs change according to the number of days a student is covered. For example, due to holidays and vacation breaks during the Fall 2 session, the period a student is covered by health insurance is considerably longer. Therefore, the cost is approximately $100 USD more than the above listed amount. Please see IEP Health Insurance Premiums.

³This cost estimate includes the $100 TB Test fee. All international students are required to be tested by QFT (Quantiferon) blood test for tuberculosis (TB). Students may check with their health insurance provider to find out if this charge may be reimbursed or covered through their health insurance. For more information about the TB Test requirement at IU, visit the International Services website.

⁴Students need to bring pocket money, too, for entertainment, snacks, and shopping. The amount will vary greatly per person. A married student must estimate an extra $995 per session ($5,970 per year) to bring a spouse or first child, plus an additional $746 per session ($4,476 per year) for each additional child or dependent.

All international students are required to have health insurance. In the United States, health insurance is necessary to get the medical care you need.

After registering for IEP classes, international students will be automatically enrolled in IU Student Health and will be billed for the insurance by the Office of the Bursar. Students who already have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements may file a waiver request in iStart.

Requirements for insurance waiver

• Maximum $2,000 Out-of-Pocket expense
• Covers all Pre-existing Conditions with no waiting period
• $500 Deductible or less
• $100,000 for each illness
• $100,000 for each accident
• $50,000 for medical evacuation
• $25,000 for repatriation of remains to the home country in case of death
• Female students must have policies that cover the costs of pregnancy, prenatal care and childbirth in an amount equal to any other sickness
• This coverage must be in force throughout a student's stay in the US
